Volkswagen is gearing up to enter the compact sedan segment with a sub 4-metre offering based on the Polo hatchback. The car is known internally as the Indian Compact Sedan (ICS). Media reports suggest that the company has already reserved a name, "Bora" for the production version of the car.
Like Polo, Vento and Passat, Bora is the name of a wind. Volkswagen has previously used the name for the fourth generation Jetta in various international markets. Italian car manufacturer Maserati, has also used it for a supercar that was produced in the 1970s.
Volkswagen is also considering the name "Derby" for the car. Names of Indian winds are also under consideration.
The Bora / Derby will take on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest and the soon-to-be-launched Figo Aspire. The car is likely to share the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine with the hatchback.
