Kayakking in Kerala: A fun filled experience surrounded by nature

The next leg of the journey took us into narrow canals—and that’s where the real magic of this experience unfolded.

BHPian Mrs&Mr_Shenu recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Another Short Ride

The riders planned a short trip to Kizhaku Kayakking, located about 20 kilometers from Kochi city. The venue accommodates up to 20 people, and we booked the entire capacity. This time, we encouraged everyone to bring along their families, including children.

Prepared for Splashes and Surprises

A splash-proof outfit is ideal for this ride—and we made sure to carry a spare, just in case. Yours truly ended up drenched in a minor mishap involving knee-deep water!

The kayaking staff provided waterproof bags for mobiles and life jackets for few. Based on the group’s preferences, we opted for a mix of single kayaks and shared doubles, especially for families.

We began with a short practice session near the starting point. Once everyone was comfortable, the group paddled toward the main bridge over the Muvattupuzha River. Our first stop was to catch the sunrise behind the Thuruthamma hanging bridge—a view that’s usually surreal, though this time it was hidden behind clouds.

Surprise Surprise

But this ride had a special twist. We had chosen this spot for a unique celebration: our group captain—and the only lady rider—was celebrating another year of her wonderful journey on this planet.

In complete secrecy, our team arranged a birthday surprise. From customizing a cake with her Royal Enfield Hunter image to transporting it to the kayaking site, every detail was handled with care. At the heart of the group, we gathered to sing the birthday song and share the cake. It was cut into equal portions and, unsurprisingly, vanished within ten minutes!

It was a heartfelt surprise and a memorable moment—something truly special for our group after a long time.

Into the Canals and Back Again

We continued further along the river for a while, with the current gently pushing us forward. The next leg of the journey took us into narrow canals—and that’s where the real magic of this experience unfolded. As I mentioned earlier, my kayak capsized while trying to pass under a low bridge. No injuries, no gulping water—just a wet reminder of how unpredictable these adventures can be!

The surroundings in this stretch were raw and untouched, offering a glimpse into the heart of Kerala’s natural beauty. We ducked under a couple of makeshift bridges, bumped into canal walls more than once, and soaked in the lush, serene landscape. Eventually, we emerged back onto the river.

Crossing the main bridge again, we made our way back to the starting point. The current wasn’t too strong, but it still took a bit of effort to paddle back.

Once ashore, we changed into dry clothes, snapped a few group photos, and began our return journey. We paused midway for a light breakfast and shared a few words of thanks with everyone.

It was a wonderful experience, and I truly hope everyone who joined us enjoyed this little adventure as much as I did.
