Skoda Gearheads knowledge session: Interaction with experts

We had an exclusive Gearhead knowledge session on the topic 'Exploring the Safety Innovations of Skoda Cars.

BHPian TurboTorque recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Event: Skoda Expert AMA session on 28th, June.

We had an exclusive Gearhead knowledge session on the topic 'Exploring the Safety Innovations of Skoda Cars,' where Skoda’s top technical experts unveiled the advanced safety features that make Skoda cars stand out. Invitations were sent to register or show interest in joining the session on June 26th, and members could submit their questions via a Google form.

We received the link to join the session on June 28th, in the afternoon, with the session scheduled for 8:00 PM. A total of 46 people showed interest and registered for the session, which began around 8:05 PM. It was a one-way audio session where only the presenter was speaking.

The session started by addressing Gearhead membership logistics issues: most members had not yet received the welcome kit; some received it missing the membership card, while others received damaged boxes. They assured us that the logistics issues had been resolved and that all members registered as of today would receive their welcome kit by the end of next month.

In the session, they did not explain any of the new safety innovations or technology; instead, they answered all the members' posted questions in the context of theme safety and a few generic questions. Below are the questions asked and answered by the Skoda tech expert. The following is based on my understanding and recall from yesterday's meeting; I may have missed a few points.

Product Queries:

What is the timeline for the 360 Camera and ADAS for the Slavia and Kushaq?

Both are under development and testing. There is no definite timeline; they will be included in the upcoming updates.

What are the plans for EVs, Diesel, and Hatchback cars in India?

Skoda Enyaq EV will be available in India; there are no plans for Diesel and Hatchbacks for the Indian market.

Safety: Tyres

What is the ideal tire pressure to be maintained? Is it better to use regular air or Nitrogen? Are the tire pressures mentioned on the doors correct?

If there is an OEM sticker on the door side indicating the tire pressure, people should follow it. Nitrogen air provides consistency; it is less likely to migrate through tire rubber and does not expand with temperature, reducing internal tire corrosion due to its moisture-free properties. However, due to cost factors and availability issues, we recommend using normal air.

When tires are filled with nitrogen and there is less air, can we fill with normal air?

We can fill with normal air to reach the nearest nitrogen station and then refill with nitrogen. It's better to stick with one type: either normal air or nitrogen.

Can we upgrade to a higher/lower tire size?

We do not recommend modifying the tire size because all testing, safety ratings, and validations have been done with the OEM tire size. Changing it could potentially lead to safety issues.

Hoe does TPMS work?

TPMS can detect and alert the driver to a drop in pressure below the critical threshold in any wheel/tire. It utilizes data from the ABS sensors on individual wheels. If the pressure in a tire drops, the radius of that particular wheel changes compared to the others. This change is then communicated to the instrument cluster to alert the driver.

Safety: Brakes

How does Brake Disc Wiping work?

In general, water, dust, and debris buildup might impact braking performance. Brake Disc Wiping (BDW) is designed to enhance braking performance in wet conditions. BDW periodically applies light braking pressure to the brake discs, removing water buildup and ensuring consistent, reliable braking even in inclement weather.

Why does the brake make noise?

It is a normal operational sound; there is nothing wrong with braking.

Why does it leave black dust on the wheel?

India is a dusty environment, and dust accumulates on the brake pads. During braking, brake dust and tiny particles from the brake pads may be emitted, especially in the initial stages. This does not mean the brake pads are excessively worn out; it does not affect safety or performance.

What is the best way to drive in a flooded street?

Safety is more important, and driving in flooded areas should be avoided if possible. It is not recommended. If unavoidable, check the water depth and proceed cautiously.

Safety: Gearbox

Are there any best driving patterns for a DSG gearbox? Does it matter?

It is difficult to answer in 2 minutes; such patterns are mentioned in the owner’s manual, specifically in the 'Starting and Driving' section. People can refer to and follow the recommendations provided.

Do we need to change the transmission oil for DSG and AT?

There are two types of DSG gearboxes: 1. Wet Clutch and 2. Dry Clutch. Oil needs to be replaced every 60,000 kms for Wet Clutch, irrespective of time. For Dry Clutch, oil change is not required as it is designed to last the lifetime of the gearbox. For AT, transmission oil needs to be replaced every 60,000 miles, irrespective of time.

Safety: Airbags

For the car that has two airbags, can we upgrade to more airbags?

Skoda’s Slavia and Kushaq models will have 6 airbags as standard from this year onwards. It is not recommended to upgrade the airbags.

When the impact is on the left side and the driver is on the right, will the driver’s airbag deploy?

Modern vehicles determine airbag deployment based on factors such as impact severity, force, collision angle, and impact location. When an impact occurs, the vehicle calculates the severity and angles; if the impact is significant and frontal, it may deploy the airbag.

Features:

Why does the door window operation make noise, and why is there water leakage and cracking sounds in the sunroof?

In India, many states are considered dusty areas; noise can occur due to loose components, dust, and debris. Regular maintenance should include cleaning these parts to eliminate the noise. It is unsafe and illegal for adults and kids to stand out in the sunroof to enjoy the drive; please do not do it.

The few questions are related to how ESP, Engine immobiliser, Hill Descent, and Hill Hold work, and they are answered with standard responses. They are also working on an interactive owner’s manual in the MySkoda Plus app, where we can scan the instrument cluster or any part to receive explanations based on the picture.

I appreciate them for this session and their effort. Some people might find these questions and answers very basic, but they can be helpful and informative for new buyers. All in all, it was a decent session.
