Scania opens its first bus manufacturing facility in India

Scania has just opened its first bus manufacturing facility in India. Located in Narasapura near Bangalore, the manufacturing plant’s current capacity is about 1,000 units per year and will employ 300 people in its first year. Scania also plans to use this plant as an export base for regions such as Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

The plant will also house a bio-gas unit, which will help produce alternative fuels locally. Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways in India, will inaugurate the plant today.

Scania already has a truck manufacturing facility in Narasapura which was inaugurated in October 2013. Scania has collectively invested around Rs. 300 crore in their truck and bus manufacturing facilities. Along with the two production facilities, the service workshop and a central parts warehouse are housed at the same site. Over the next five years, Scania aims to raise its production capacity to 2,500 buses and 5,000 trucks. The automaker also plans to recruit about 800 employees by the end of 2017.
