Rumour: Maruti Baleno to get 1.2L Dualjet Smart Hybrid engine

Last week, a test mule of the Baleno sporting a Smart Hybrid badge was spotted in Delhi. According to a media report, Maruti is likely to introduce the 1.2-litre Dualjet Smart Hybrid engine (K12C) on the Baleno in India.

The new BS-VI ready, 1.2-litre petrol engine is expected to produce 89 BHP and 120 Nm of torque, which is slightly more than the current 1.2-litre engine (K12B) that is available on the Swift, Dzire and Baleno. It could be paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The updated 16-valve unit is reported to feature two injectors per cylinder. The injectors could be positioned closer to the intake valve, which is claimed to improve atomisation and therefore efficiency. The new engine is expected to get redesigned intake ports, combustion chambers and piston crowns. The under-side of the pistons are cooled using oil jets. It could also feature a new exhaust gas re-circulation system and engine start/stop system. Reports suggest that the Smart Hybrid system will use a single battery setup.

It has been rumoured that the new 1.2-litre Dualjet engine is likely to be offered on the Delta and Zeta variants only. The older K12B unit is expected to be continued along with the 1.0-litre Boosterjet petrol engine.
