Renault working on new MPV, compact sedan, compact SUV

Renault is planning to enter more segments in the Indian automobile market. The company plans to launch various models and variants, priced under Rs. 8 lakh over the next three years. Among the new models to be launched are a new MPV, a sub-4 metre sedan and a sub-4 metre SUV.

The MPV, codenamed RBC, will compete against the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The design for this vehicle has been finalised. The sub-4 metre sedan has been codenamed LBC. It will target the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire. The sub-4 metre SUV, codenamed HBC, will take on the Ford EcoSport and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. The LBC and HBC are still at the conceptualisation stage.

All these new cars will be based on a modified version of the CMF-A platform that underpins the Kwid. The CMF-A+ platform, as it is known, will be suitable for wider bodies and more powerful engines. It may be recalled that at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, Carlos Ghosn, chairman of Renault, had said that the Renault-Nissan Alliance will use the CMF-A platform to underpin upcoming cars with different body styles (click here to read report).

In recent months, Renault has had a good run in India. The Kwid, its smallest offering, has turned the company's fortunes around. The car has helped the company garner a 2.5% market share in FY 2016. The company's target is to achieve a 5% market share in FY 2017.
