Quality issues with my Toyota Hyryder: Faulty display & broken AC vent

For an iconic Japanese brand, this is highly disappointing. Excuses like "the cheap plastic switches are from Maruti" are too lame.

BHPian Prakash Rao recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Cautionary points to note after recent experiences:

  • I have the latest firmware, viz., Update_File_ 76TR.07.00. Have not noticed any tangible changes. However, the day before yesterday, when the vehicle started, the main, large dashboard display suddenly had vertical lines all across, like some spoilt mobile phone display! I had to depend on the Instrument Cluster behind the steering wheel. After a few on & off of the engine, the display came back on, although it is still not 100% satisfactory. If Toyota India has had sufficient complaints, I hope they will swiftly investigate and make a recall.
  • The small plastic sliding buttons for controlling the direction of the AC vents (beside the centre dashboard display) have broken for the 4th time. Every time, I take it to Ravindu Toyota, the helpless technician says they get around a dozen Hyryders almost daily with exactly the same issue since it’s a manufacturing quality/design problem. Until it's replaced FOC, most of the drivers, end-up using a paper straw that guides the airflow direction! For an iconic Japanese brand, this is shameful and highly disappointing, while I am afraid, irresponsible excuses that the cheap plastic switches are all from Maruti etc are too lame. The issue too demands a recall.

Attached is proof of Toyota India's quality issues w.r.t Hyryder

Here's what BHPian Palio_2005 had to say about the matter:

I haven't faced any issues with the central vent breaking off. My car is now 1.6 years old with 32K under the belt.

Overall performance of the car is extremely satisfactory with an average of 22-23 with a mix of Mumbai city and highway runs.

2 major grouses - lack of boot space, spare wheel arrangement (should have a chain like Innova) and rear seat being too upright. I think an additional recline of 5-7 degrees would have been ideal.

Here's what BHPian OpenRoads had to say about the matter:

It's really unfortunate for someone to invest so much in a car and face these issues. Toyota is seriously losing its reputation due to this JV with the lord but at the same time, it's all about market share and business.

To me, your issue seems to do something with the display interface. Assuming no after-market work is done with your Head Unit this can be due to a contact issue between the screen and head unit that can be repaired or changed as per warranty.
