Porsche announces 718 Boxster, Cayman with 4-cylinder engines

Porsche has officially announced that the new Boxster and Cayman will be renamed to the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman in 2016. The cars have been named after the Porsche 718, which succeeded the Porsche 550 Spyder back in the 1950's and used its 4-cylinder engine to win accolades like three first place finishes from 1959-1960 at the Italian Targa Florio race in Sicily.

The names are also indicative of the new turbocharged flat 4-cylinder engines that will be used in the twins. The Roadster will be priced above the Coupé just like it has been done for the 911 range. The new 4-cylinder engines with forced induction have been developed to meet the increasingly stringent emission and efficiency norms. It remains to be seen if Porsche will continue to offer the option of a six-cylinder mill.
