One time parking charges in North Delhi could rise

Vehicle owners in the nation's capital may have to dig deeper into their pockets, as authorities are considering a hike in the one time parking charges levied. The last time these rates were revised was in 2004. Since then, the level of traffic induced congestion and pollution has gone up considerably, leading officials to consider the charge hike in order to generate more revenue while deterring people from buying new vehicles.

The proposal has been put before the North Delhi Municipal Corporation’s (NDMC) standing committee. For cars that cost less than Rs. 4 lakh, the charge is expected to rise from the current rate of Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 8,000. For cars that cost more than Rs. 4 lakh, the charge will vary from 4 - 15% of the vehicle's value, with the rate increasing with the rise in car price. A hefty cut to pay for an already depreciating asset.

Motorcycle and scooter owners will be affected as well. Two-wheelers that cost less than Rs. 60,000 will face a charge of Rs. 1,000, while anything more expensive will invite a charge equal to 2% of the vehicle's cost. Auto-rickshaw owners will have to pay Rs. 2,000, while taxi owners will have to cough up Rs. 5,000. Owners of commercial vehicles will also have to pay more, with charges for buses going up from Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 32,000.
