Max Verstappen wins the 2018 Austrian GP

Red Bull's Max Verstappen has won the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix. The two Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel finished second and third respectively.

Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas started from pole position ahead of his team mate Lewis Hamilton. At the start, Hamilton took over the lead of the race, while Bottas dropped down to second place. Initially, it looked like Mercedes would dominate the race, but Bottas was forced to retire with a gearbox issue. At this point, the virtual safety car was deployed. Almost all the front runners pitted for fresh tyres as the track marshals cleared the stranded Mercedes. Meanwhile, Mercedes opted to keep Hamilton out. He eventually pitted on lap 25, which dropped him down to fourth place. However, Hamilton's race was cut short as he was forced to retired with an engine issue.

Verstappen was in the lead of the race with Raikkonen a couple of seconds behind. The second Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo who was running in second place at one point, had to retire with a gearbox issue. Vettel, who started in sixth place on the grid, took the final podium place.

The Haas cars of Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen finished in fourth and fifth respectively, ahead of the Force India cars of Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez. At one point, Fernando Alonso (McLaren) was running at the tail end of the field. The Spaniard went on to finish in eight place, while his teammate Stoffel Vandoorne had to retire. The two Alfa Romeo-Saubers of Charles Leclerc and Marcus Ericsson finished in ninth and tenth positions respectively.

With this result, Sebastian Vettel has retaken the lead of the World Drivers' Championship from Lewis Hamilton with a single point separating the two. In the World Constructors' Championship, Ferrari is now ahead of Mercedes by 10 points. The next race will be held at Silverstone on July 8, 2018.
