Maruti-Suzuki: 2 crore cars up!

Maruti Suzuki has built 2 crore cars in India in 34 years and 5 months since production first kicked off in December 1983 - a new record. In Japan, the same production milestone was achieved in 45 years and 9 months. 

The 2 croreth model happened to be a Swift, of which 19.4 lakh units have been produced till date. The brand has produced approximately 31.7 lakh units of the Alto and 29.1 lakh units of the Maruti 800. A total of 21.3 lakh units of the WagonR and 19.4 lakh units of the Omni have been built in India.

Maruti reached the 10 lakh units milestone in around 11 years since production began. It took another 11 years for the carmaker to reach the 50 lakh mark. In 2011, 28 years since production began, Maruti built the 1 croreth car followed by the 1.5 croreth, 4 years later.

The Maruti 800 was the first model that was manufactured in India. Today, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has manufacturing facilities at Gurgaon and Manesar in Haryana and Mehsana in Gujarat. A total of 16 models are currently assembled at these units, which include the Alto, WagonR, Swift, Dzire, Baleno, Ignis, Vitara Brezza, Ertiga and Ciaz.
