Hyundai to recall Kona Electric over faulty battery cells

13 incidents of fire involving the Kona Electric have been documented.

Hyundai has announced that it will recall the Kona Electric over faulty battery cells. The South Korean transport ministry has stated that a short circuit due to faulty manufacturing of the high voltage battery cells could result in a fire.

25,564 units of the Kona Electric manufactured between September 2017 and March 2020 are said to be affected by this issue. The recalled cars will get a new battery and a software update.

The report states that around 13 incidents of fire involving the Kona Electric have been documented till date, including one each in Canada and Austria.

In India, the Kona Electric is offered with a 39.2 kWh battery that powers an electric motor with a rated output of 134 BHP and 395 Nm. Just like the car sold in the international market, the Indian car's battery is also manufactured by LG Chem Ltd.

Hyundai is yet to confirm if the Kona EVs sold in India are affected by this recall.
