Skoda has announced its entry into the hotly contested sub-4 metre SUV segment with the Kylaq. Prices start at Rs 7.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Bookings will commence on December 2 and the first cars will be delivered on January 27.
The Skoda Kylaq is based on the MQB-A0-IN platform, which it shares with the Slavia and Kushaq. The compact SUV is powered by the familiar 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, which produces 113 BHP and 178 Nm. It is paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Skoda claims the Kylaq can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 10.5 seconds.
The Kylaq features an independent front suspension and a torsion beam at the rear, similar to the Kushaq. However, the Kylaq is 38 kg lighter than its larger cousin. The brake setup consists of discs at the front and drums at the rear. It also comes with an electronic differential lock.
Design-wise, the new Kylaq looks like a typical Skoda and almost like a mini-Kushaq. It has a similar front fascia with a split headlamp setup, clean and crisp lines all over and rides on 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. The compact SUV has a ground clearance of 189 mm and a 446-litre boot.
Inside, the Kylaq gets a dual-screen layout with an 8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It has wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a wireless phone charger, ventilated front seats, an electrically adjustable driver seat, a Canton sound system, ambient lighting and more.
Some of the safety features offered on the Kylaq include 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, ISOFIX, three-point seat belts and headrests for all occupants.
