Govt. to launch Bharat NCAP on August 22

Bharat NCAP will be applicable to type-approved vehicles of the 'M1' category.

Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport & Highways, will be launching the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) on August 22, 2023.

According to the government, Bharat NCAP aims to provide a tool to make a comparative assessment of the crash safety of vehicles available in the market. Under this program, manufacturers can voluntarily offer their cars to be tested as per the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. Based on the performance, the cars will be awarded star ratings for Adult Occupants and Child Occupants.

Bharat NCAP will be applicable to type-approved vehicles of the 'M1' category. These include passenger vehicles with up to eight seats and a gross weight of under 3.5 tonnes.

The Bharat NCAP standard will be aligned with global crash test protocols factoring in the existing Indian regulations. This would increase the export potential of Indian cars as they would comply with higher safety standards.
