Escaping Delhi diesel ban: Convert Mitsubishi Pajero Sport to CNG?

With the 10-year diesel vehicle scrapping policy looming next year, I’m wondering if there’s any way to extend my 2015 Pajero Sport's life.

BHPian Aroongupta recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Hi everyone,

I own a 2015 Pajero Sport Automatic (Diesel) and absolutely love the vehicle. I live in Ghaziabad (UP), and the vehicle is Haryana registered. With the 10-year diesel vehicle scrapping policy looming next year, I’m wondering if there’s any way to extend its life.

I suspect the answer would be a big NO, but I still want to ask. Is it possible to convert a Pajero Sport automatic diesel to CNG or electric? If yes, does it make sense in terms of cost, performance, and practicality?

I’m not ready to part with this car and would love to hear your thoughts or experiences regarding such conversions.

Thanks in advance!

Here's what BHPian NomadSK had to add to this matter:

No idea if you can change it to electric. But definitely can’t run it solely on CNG. If you fuel a diesel engine with natural gas it simply wouldn’t start. Diesel engines can’t run on CNG because it’s combustion requires spark plugs for ignition.

Diesel engines causes fuel to ignite through extreme compression (auto ignition). To self-ignite, CNG would need to be compressed at a ratio far greater than what internal combustion engines are capable of.

Auto ignition of petrol is 210C, diesel is 280C, CNG is around 540C. Higher the auto ignition temp, higher the compression would be required to detonate. This also explains a bit of knocking.

Meanwhile here's what BHPian BhayanaV shared:

You can get it registered outside NCR but then cannot drive it in NCR. Diesel engines are not a good candidate for any conversions, petrol are good fit for CNG conversion. Just sell/pass it on to someone you would want to.
