BMW unveils third-gen X3, to launch later this year

BMW has unveiled the new-gen X3, which will be launched in the international markets later this year. This has marked the introduction of the third-generation model in the X3 range, which was originally launched in 2003.

The new X3 is built BMW's CLAR platform. It is 4,716 mm in length, 1,897 mm in width and 1,676 mm in height. This translates to an increase of 61 mm in length, 17 mm in width and 16 mm in height. Despite the increase in dimensions, the new X3 is around 55 kg lighter than its predecessor, thanks to the use of lightweight metals and alloys in its construction.

The overall design of the new-gen X3 is an evolution of the previous-gen model. The front fascia is characterized by a wider kidney grille, while the new LED headlamps have been separated from the grille, unlike the arrangement found on the new X5. The front bumpers get larger air dams on both sides. It rolls on 18-inch alloys as standard, while the top-end trims get 21-inch wheels.

The interiors get a floating infotainment system with an optional gesture control. It will also come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The new X3 comes with a 54 mm longer wheelbase, which results in more cabin space. Other features on offer with the new X3 include ambient lighting and coloured heads-up display.

Powertrain options on offer with the new X3 will include two petrol and diesel engines, while an M-spec petrol engine will also be on offer:

• BMW X3 xDrive20i - 2.0L, four-cylinder petrol, 181 BHP, 290 Nm

• BMW X3 xDrive30i - 2.0L, four-cylinder petrol, 248 BHP, 350 Nm

• BMW X3 xDrive20d - 2.0L, four-cylinder diesel, 188 BHP, 400 Nm

• BMW X3 xDrive30d - 3.0L, inline-6 diesel, 262 BHP, 620 Nm
