Bharat NCAP crash test norms to be implemented from October 1

The Bharat NCAP norms will be aligned with global crash test protocols

According to media reports, the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) crash test norms are likely to come into effect from October 1, 2023.

Mahmood Ahmed, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), has stated that a draft notification has been finalized, which will be put up for mandatory review on July 1 for 30 days. The government will invite feedback from OEMs and other stakeholders during this period, which will end on August 31.

He added that the government is open to reconsidering the date of implementation beyond October 1 to accommodate the challenges and give more time for its implementation.

Under the Bharat NCAP program, vehicles will be evaluated for adult and child occupant protection and safety assist technologies. The vehicles will be awarded 'Star Ratings' depending on their performance in crash tests. The new norms will be aligned with global crash test protocols factoring in the existing Indian regulations.
