AMG to phase out 5.5-litre V8 engine in 2016

The era of downsizing is upon us and the much to the dismay of many petrol-heads, AMG will be phasing out its 5.5-litre V8 motor. As expected, the engine will be replaced by Affalterbach's new 4.0-litre turbo-charged V8 that debuted with the Mercedes-AMG GT.

According to the report by Autocar, AMG will phase out the 5.5-litre V8 in 2016, to make way for the more efficient 4.0-litre. The M157 engine is currently used on several AMGs including the all new GLE63 S Coupe SUV. The motor was introduced only in 2011, as a replacement for the M156 6.3-litre V8. However, the 4.0-litre V8 will eventually become AMG's mainstay.

The final car to get the 5.5-litre V8, will be the S-Class Coupe which is expected to make its debut in 2016.
