Passenger vehicle sales up 14% in October 2019

Passenger vehicles sales in October 2019 were up by 13.92% compared to the same period last year.

Passenger vehicle sales stood at 2,96,642 units in October 2019. During the same month last year, the segment's sales stood at 2,60,384 units.

The commercial vehicle segment saw a de-growth of 23.51% in October 2019 as compared to the same period last year. Sales during the period of April-October were also down by 13.31%.

3-wheeler sales in October 2019 were up 8.49%, while April-October 2019 sales were up 1.72% compared to April-October 2018.

In the 2-wheeler segment, month-on-month sales were up 8.91%, but April-October 2019 sales were down by 3.06% compared to the same period last year.

The auto industry, in general, registered a growth of 7.93% in October 2019.

Kia is now the 5th largest car brand in India

Kia sold 12,850 units of the Seltos in October 2019, making it the fifth largest brand in India in terms of sales volumes. The carmaker registered a month-on-month growth of 65.72%.

Following the launch of the Seltos in August this year, Kia is said to have received more than 50,000 bookings for the SUV in just two and a half months. On the first day of bookings, the carmaker had received over 6,000 orders.

Kia is reportedly working on a compact SUV that is expected to be based on the Hyundai Venue. Its launch could see Kia's market share grow even further.

Maruti remains at the top spot with 1,39,121 units. Hyundai sold 50,010 units in October 2019, which places it in second place, while Mahindra (18,460 units) and Tata (13,169 units) are in third and fourth place respectively.

Vehicle sales actually declined in September 2019

According to the latest figures provided by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), vehicle sales declined in September 2019 despite festive discounts.

New vehicle registrations fell by 12.9% in September 2019 compared to the same period last year.

Passenger vehicle sales saw a decline of 20.1% from 1,97,653 units in September 2018 to 1,57,972 units in September 2019.

2-wheeler sales fell by 12.1%. 10,98,271 units were sold last month compared to 12,48,998 units in the same month last year.

The commercial vehicle segment registered an 18.5% decline in sales, while the 3-wheeler segment record a marginal growth of 1.8%.

Mercedes-Benz sells 9,915 cars in Jan-Sep 2019 period

According to Mercedes-Benz, 9,915 units were sold during the 9-month period of January to September 2019. During the same period last year, the carmaker had sold 11,789 units. Sales have already crossed the 10,000-unit mark in the first week of October.

Models like the Long Wheelbase E-Class, C-Class, GLS and GLC were also in demand. In fact, it is said that the Long Wheelbase E-Class was the highest selling model during this period.

The Dream Cars segment, which includes AMG models, sports cars and convertibles amongst others, registered a growth of 160% and outperformed other segments in the first half of this year.

August 2019 Car Sales - The bloodbath continues

The sales figures for the month of August 2019 are in and things are certainly not looking good. Almost all manufacturers have registered a decline.

Maruti Suzuki sold 93,173 cars in August 2019 compared to 96,400 units in the previous month. Sales were down 36% compared to the same period last year.

Hyundai's sales dropped from 39,010 units in July 2019 to 38,000 units in the month of August. The carmaker registered a year-on-year decline of 17%. 

Mahindra sold 13,150 cars as opposed to 16,800 in the previous month. The carmaker registered a decline of 27.1% compared to August 2018.

Tata Motors registered the highest drop in sales at 60.3% compared to last year. In August 2019, the company sold 7,316 units, whereas July sales amounted to 10,485 units.

Honda's sales dropped from 10,250 units in July 2019 to 8,291 units in August. The company registered a decline of 51.3% (YOY). On the other hand, Toyota sold 278 cars more in August 2019 compared to the previous month. However, year-on-year sales were down by 24.3%.

Ford sales dropped by 31.4% compared to the previous year. The carmaker sold 5,517 units in August 2019. Renault sold 5,700 units in August 2019 - 2,040 more than the previous month. Nissan too registered a small increase in sales in August, but its year-on-year sales were down by 54.5%.

Volkswagen, Fiat and Skoda registered a YOY decline of 30.8%, 56.6% and 12.5% respectively.

The car industry has been witnessing an unprecedented slow down in the past few months. According to the latest figures, the downward trend continued in July 2019. 

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) India was by far the worst hit. Only 511 units were sold in July as opposed to 843 units in the previous month. That's a 39.4% drop in sales. Compared to the previous year, FCA India sales have gone down by 58.5%. This includes Jeep sales which were down 35.8%.

Renault recorded a 32.2% reduction in sales compared to the previous month. 3,660 cars were sold in July, compared to 5,400 in June. Sales were down 41.1% compared to the previous year.

Tata Motors' sales dropped by 21.5% in July 2019. The automaker sold 10,485 units as opposed to 13,351 units in June 2019.

Ford sold 6,284 units in July, compared to 5,333 units in June 2019. That's an increase of 17.8%. The carmaker registered a year-on-year degrowth of 19.6%.

Nissan sales slumped by 21.9% in July 2019, compared to the previous month. It also registered a year-on-year degrowth of 43.4%. Datsun registered a 12.5% reduction in sales and a 55.9% year-on-year degrowth.

Maruti Suzuki saw a 13.2% drop in sales compared to June 2019. The carmaker had sold 1,11,014 units in June, which dropped to 96,400 units in July.

Brands like Hyundai, Mahindra, Honda and Toyota registered a single-digit degrowth. Meanwhile, Volkswagen and Skoda sales rose by 1.5% and 9.0% respectively.

Mercedes-Benz sells 6,561 units in H1-2019

Mercedes-Benz has sold 6,561 units from January-June 2019. 

Sales were down by 1,500 units compared to the same period last year, when the carmaker had sold 8061 units. However, the company is hoping for sales to recover from the third quarter of 2019.

According to the company, demand for the Long Wheelbase E-Class, C-Class, GLC and GLE has been strong. The Long Wheelbase E-Class was the highest selling model in H1 2019. 

Sales of AMG and Dream Cars also increased by 47% in the first half of this year.

All vehicle segments register de-growth in April 2019

As per the vehicle registration data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), vehicle sales continued their downward trend in the month of April 2019.

2-wheeler sales were down by 4% at 12,85,470 units compared to the previous month. The personal vehicle segment also registered a marginal de-growth of 2%. 2,42,457 units were sold in April 2019 compared to 2,46,615 units in the previous month. 

3-wheeler sales were down by 12% from 53,573 in March 2019 to 47,183 units in the last month. While the commercial vehicle segment saw a slight growth of 2% compared to the previous month, sales were down by 16% compared to the same period last year.

March 2019 vehicle registration data shows marginal growth

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has released vehicle registration data for the month of March 2019. Following a slump in February, last month's figures show marginal growth.

In the 2-wheeler segment, 13,24,823 units were sold in March 2019, which is a growth of 10% compared to the previous month. Personal vehicle sales also grew by 5% from 2,31,512 units in February 2019 to 2,42,705 units in March 2019. 

3-wheeler sales rose by 3% compared to February 2019. A total of 53,229 units were sold in March compared to 51,463 a month before. The commercial vehicle segment also saw a slight growth of 2%.

February 2019 vehicle registration data shows downward trend

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has released vehicle registration data for the month of February 2019. The latest figures indicate a downward trend.

The month of February saw vehicle sales drop making it one of the slowest months of FY2018-19. All vehicle segments saw a downward turn during this month. The total number of vehicles sold during the month of February 2019 was down 8.06% compared to last year and saw a 15.03% decline vis-a-vis January 2019.

2-wheeler sales dropped by 7.97% compared to the same month last year and sales dropped by 13.45% compared to January 2019. The personal vehicle segment registered the highest Month-on-Month change. Sales dropped by 28.62% compared to January 2019. Also, car sales were down 8.25% compared to February 2018.

The 3-wheeler segment also saw a 10.32% decline compared to the same period last year. Commercial vehicle sales registered a Month-on-Month growth of 4.92% but compared to the same period last year, sales were down 7.08%.

Vehicle sales have been on a decline ever since the government hiked the insurance costs in September 2018. The effects of this along with other factors is evident from the latest data. According to FADA, the current inventory levels of personal vehicles is 50-60 days, while that of 2-wheelers is 80-90 days. The inventory levels of commercial vehicles ranges from 45-50 days.
