Volkswagen starts production of new Passat in India

Volkswagen has announced that it has started production of the new Passat at its Aurangabad facility.

The eighth-generation Passat was unveiled in July 2014. In February 2017, Volkswagen had confirmed that car would be launched by the end of the year.

The company had launched the Passat in India back in 2011 and discontinued it in 2013.

The Passat will be Volkswagen's first MQB platform-based sedan in India. Initially, only a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine will be available in the car. The unit churns out 175 BHP and is paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The exact specifications and variant information will be disclosed later.

Volkswagen is expected to position the Passat against the Honda Accord, Skoda Superb and Toyota Camry.
