Toyota will not use AMT in its cars

Japanese auto major Toyota has declared that it will not use automated manual transmission (AMT) technology in its cars. The company will stick to regular automatic transmission, as it considers it to be more durable than AMT.

According to Toyota, AMT technology is dated and has a higher number of movable components compared to a conventional automatic, resulting in higher wear and tear. This could translate to higher repair costs.

AMT technology has been a big hit in the Indian automobile market. It is not as expensive as a conventional automatic gearbox and makes driving the car in traffic relatively stress-free since the driver is not needed to operate a clutch pedal. Major players like Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors are already using the technology in their cars, while Mahindra and Renault are expected to use it in their cars in the near future. While there is very little or no loss in fuel economy in AMT cars compared to regular manuals, traditional automatics are said to deliver 15-20% lesser fuel economy.
