Tata's new SUV to be based on JLR's Discovery Sport

Last year, we had reported that Tata Motors was rumored to be developing an SUV based on the Land Rover Freelander 2 (L359). Now, there are reports that this new SUV will be based on the same platform as the new Discovery Sport (L550). The L550 platform is a heavily modified derivative of the L359.

This new SUV from Tata (codename: Q501), will be a 5-seater and powered by Fiat's 2.0 litre MultiJet II diesel engine. The Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' sourced 2.0 litre MultiJet engine is likely to be manufactured at the Tata-Fiat Ranjangaon factory. A 7-seater SUV is also expected (codename: Q502).

Tata is likely to position this SUV above the Safari Storme. While the company's first premium offering - Aria, did not do too well in India, positioning and promoting this SUV correctly, will be crucial for its success.
