A Tata owner adds an Ignis to his garage: Likes & dislikes post 7000 km

In sweltering 40 degree and above, the AC doesn't impress, specially with more than 3 people in the car.

7500 km/1 year update:

My Zeta MT has completed 1 year a month back and all in all it has been a satisfactory experience.

What I like:

  • Tractable engine. You can chose to drive it lazily, and it will potter around in city without needing frequent gearshifts. The 3rd gear works like an automatic, you can pick up speeds right from 15-20kmpl all the way upto 80kmph. Although it is not recommended to lug the engine, but this is just to emphasise how finely tuned the engine and transmission is.
  • Fuel efficiency and performance. Very few cars meet the criteria of being Fuel efficient yet Fun to drive. The Ignis is one such car. Even when driven hard, the fuel efficiency figures don't go south of 12-13 kmpl. In normal City driving conditions, 17-18kmpl with AC on all the time is a breeze for the Ignis.
  • The front seats. Very few cars (even from Maruti stable nowadays) in the budget segment, come with healthy side bolstering and side support. The Ignis's front seats are absolutely fantastic. For reference, the new age Maruti's like Jimny don't have such good seats as the Ignis. I distinctly remember 1st generation Ertiga having similar seats, with fantastic side bolstering and underthigh support.
  • Large footwell area. For a person with long legs, this is godsend. No more touching knees with the dashboard plastic. Ample room to rest your leg. Dead pedal is missed though (I think its there in AGS variant).
  • All round visibility and manoverability. The visibility from the front seats is very good, and compact dimensions and chuckable steering mean that getting in and out of gaps crowded traffic is very easy. Coupled with that the near instantaneous power and torque output on accelerator pedal input, you can just point and shoot the car in any traffic gap. Something that is a dream with Turbo Petrol's.

What I don't:

  • SmartPlay Android Auto. Maruti just doesn't have any answer to Google maps hanging in the middle of navigation. Even a restart of the HU doesn't help. The only way to get back is to switch off the car, lock it, wait for few minutes and then turn on the HU so that its rebooted OS (From the Suzuki Logo).
  • The ride quality. The ride quality is stiff, and there is no escaping it.
  • Steering. Although the self center mechanism is corrected to a great extent post 2020, the Ignis's steering still doesn't match that of say a Tiago wich center's completely and has more feedback.
  • AC. In sweltering 40 degree and above, the AC doesn't impress, specially with more than 3 people in the car. Again as I said in my last report, it seems to be issue with heat transmission from the thin and low quality window glasses and large glass area.
