Tata Motors bags government contract for 10,000 electric cars

Tata Motors will be supplying 10,000 electric vehicles (EVs) to the Government of India. The company has released a statement announcing that it has won a contract to supply EVs to the state-owned Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) following a bidding process.

Tata Motors outbid Mahindra and Nissan to bag the contract under which, it will deliver 10,000 EVs over the next 12 months. According to a media report, 500 electric cars will be delivered over the first three months, while the remaining 9,500 units will be supplied in over the course of the remaining nine months.

The model offered will reportedly be an electric version of the Tigor compact sedan. Each unit of these cars will cost Rs. 11.20 lakh (including GST). Tata will offer a 5-year warranty on these vehicles. 

The government had announced in August 2017 that it was looking to replace its current fleet of cars with electric vehicles. For this, EESL had invited bids for 10,000 all-electric four-door sedans offering a maximum range of 120-150 km on a single charge. The cars will be used by government departments in Delhi-NCR.
