Tata Harrier Petrol is still a while away

Recently, there were some reports in the media that the Tata Harrier 1.5L Petrol is launching soon. We can confirm that the news is unfounded & the engine is a long time away.

The Tata Harrier petrol is unlikely to be launched before 2021 or 2022. The engine in question is a brand new direct-injection motor that would require a lot of testing before it finds its way into cars with the OMEGA platform. In fact, the beta engine is yet to be fired up for the first time.

The new engine is expected only after the CAFE norms come into effect. It is expected to be paired with Tata's in-house developed 7-speed wet clutch DCT.

Further, there is no dedicated team working on the new engine at the moment and there are no Harrier petrol prototypes running either. Development of the petrol engine was hampered as more efforts were put into the development of the BS6-compliant 1.2-litre engine for the Nexon.

A separate team is handling the tuning of the turbo petrol engine that will power the Altroz.
