Tata Altroz diesel review: Pros, Cons & 35,000 KM Update

My Altroz has covered close to 34,500 km till date and has recently undergone 30,000 kms service in the month of December.

BHPian AutoYogi recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Hi all! It's been a long time since I updated this thread. I am giving an update after 6 months post the AC fix. The AC is working fine as of now, sometimes it feels a bit too cold even at 30 degrees but that is the way AC has been tuned in Altroz Diesel.

My Altroz has covered close to 34,500 km till date and has recently undergone 30,000 kms service in the month of December. It was just an oil and oil filter change along with a tightening session of all the under-body bolts and stuff. Few points I would like to mention below

Pros:
1) The ride and handling package is awesome. The balance between ride and handling is too good without compromising on either of them, the ride is not too stiff as well since my car runs on 195/60 R16 tyres (stock tyres are 185/60 R16) and has that added side wall cushioning.
2) Braking is strong below 90 Kmph, adequate below 110 Kmph and satisfactory below 130 Kmph. I try not to drive over 90 Kmph given our road conditions.
3) Steering feel and feedback is good, also the return to center action is nice.
4) Good drive-ability along with nice performance when the right gear is maintained. Good fuel efficiency is an added bonus.
5) The audio system is well tuned and the infotainment (7 inch) with Android Auto/Apple Car Play feels nice to use on a long drive.
6) No niggles to report post the AC issue which was eventually sorted in the month of June.
7) Nice seating comfort in the front seats along with a nice arm rest.
8) The supremely light clutch surprises me every time I drive the car, I have never driven a diesel car in my life that has such a light and well calibrated clutch.
9) The ABC pedals are placed lower compared to the other vehicles which is something I actually prefer/like and is very comfortable for my style of driving.
10) Paint quality is very good and the paint thickness is sufficient enough for Indian road conditions.
11) AC could be tuned better, AC feels too cold even at 30 degree centigrade. Rear AC could have been more powerful as well.

Cons:
1) The rear seat is just decent for people above 5'9 in height because the rear seat base is short on under thigh support and the rear seat back is a bit upright for longer journeys than we would prefer. I purchased this car as a 2 seater only considering that we are a family consisting of three 6 footers and we have a Fortuner for travelling together in comfort.
2) No aftermarket parts to upgrade unlike VAG cars,Ford cars, etc. I want to upgrade the brake rotors to drilled ones but I am not able to source any. I am thinking of upgrading to nexon brake setup but that will require changing complete front brake setup (calipers, pins, discs, pads and a lot of other stuff) but I am worried about warranty and the ABS working in emergency situations. If someone can help me with this please let me know.
3) The reflection of the dash on the front windshield is way too irritating and hampers visibility.
4) The thick A pillars hamper visibility and can swallow one full car away from your sight.
5) Rear camera quality could be better.
6) Service experience could be better. I informed the service center during recent service that I feel the engine vibrations are more compared to earlier and the service guy just kept over torquing the engine mounts even though they were super tight. All I could hear and see was the air gun crying to tighten the bolts as they were already tight enough. Instead of checking the engine mounts these guys over tightened the bolts to death.
7) Engine NVH could be improved. I can feel slight vibrations on pedals and the engine growls a lot above 2000 rpm. Mahindra diesel engines are way superior in terms of NVH and Power delivery compared to Tata diesel engines.
8) Jerky/abrupt power delivery can be experienced at certain speeds and RPM's in city speeds. Driver can very well feel it.
9) There has been a rattling noise front right side of driver area from day 1 and it took me almost 2 years to find out that the rattling is emanating from right side AC vent.
10) The Infotainment gets laggy and buggy at times. I wish I could upgrade to the latest infotainment provided in newer Tata cars which is way too smooth.

With a few recent clicks

Post a nice wash session. This is how I always take my cars to service center so that they take good care of my car during service.

Dashboard reflection is a constant thing during day time no matter the weather conditions.

Air intake hose was changed under warranty as I found a crack in it. Luckily the part was in stock.

With the above Pros and Cons in place I am still one happy customer in-spite of the bad start with Tata Motors pathetic service experience. I would like to thank Team-BHP and all our respected and lovely members for all the support and informative discussions on this esteemed forum. My car will be 2 years young this 26th Jan 2025. I had love to travel a lot more kms with my car this year.
