Skoda, VW cars could get a new 8-speed automatic gearbox

Skoda and Volkswagen cars could use the Aisin AQ300 gearbox.

According to a media report, Skoda Auto VW India plans to replace the existing 7-speed DSG with a new 8-speed automatic transmission. The new gearbox is expected to debut on the Kushaq facelift.

The report states that Skoda and Volkswagen cars could use the Aisin AQ300 gearbox in the future. It is also said that the company is looking to localize production of the transmission to keep costs down.

The Aisin AQ300 is a more robust transmission with a higher torque rating compared to the current 7-speed DSG offered in both Skoda and VW models in India. The AQ300 can handle 300 Nm, which would allow the carmaker to extract more performance from the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine.

Currently, the 1.5-litre TSI engine is only available with a 7-speed DSG, after the 6-speed manual variants were discontinued in September. It is said that Skoda intends to free up production of manual transmissions for the Kylaq compact SUV.
