Rumour: Tata & Chery may co-develop SUV to rival Creta

According to a media report, Tata Motors and China-based Chery Automobile could jointly develop a mid-size SUV to rival models like the Hyundai Creta. It is rumoured to be launched around 2021.

It was reported that Tata's new mid-size SUV, which is internally known as the Blackbird, would be based on the ALFA platform. However, modifying the smaller ALFA platform has reportedly been ruled out since it cannot support larger diameter wheels. Downsizing the OMEGA platform that underpins the Harrier was also proving to be expensive. Besides, developing a third platform for 4-4.5 meter SUVs would not be feasible either.

Therefore, it is believed that Tata Motors could leverage its relationship with Chery to share platforms. A partnership would also give the Chinese carmaker entry into the lucrative Indian market. Both brands could introduce products based on the same platform, with similar suspension components and powertrains.
