Rumour: Renault halts Kwid production over engine noise issue

Renault is rumoured to have stopped production of the Kwid hatchback since May 11, 2016. According to media reports, the company has scrapped 1,500 engines due to high noise levels.

According to Renault, it only conducted regular maintenance at its Oragadum facility. The company claims that first phase of maintenance was conducted last week and production and deliveries have not been impacted as it has ramped up production in line with its targets.

Interestingly, filings with the Government of Tamil Nadu reveal that the plant was scheduled to undergo maintenance between May 21 and May 29.

The Kwid has been Renault's most successful product in the Indian market. It has recently taken the French company to fourth position among the manufacturers in the country with respect to sales. Since its launch in September 2015, the car has garnered more than 1.25 lakh bookings and commands a waiting period of at least five months.
