Renewed my driving license in KL without visiting the RTO: Here's how

Since I am 40 years old, I was asked to submit a Certificate for Visual Standards for Driving and Medical Certificate FORM 1A.

BHPian vijith recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

My driving license is valid upto 23/06/2025. So I decided to renew the driving license ONLINE in March 2025 itself and the procedure is fairly simple.

Following are the steps:

  1. Open Parivahan website and select Kerala state RTO.
  2. Apply online as per the steps mentioned in their website which is self explanatory and please ensure that a recent passport size photo and signature is scanned and made ready for use as per the resolution and size mentioned in their website.
  3. After payment of the renewal fee which is Rs 400 for LMV/Motor Cycle with Gear, I received an SMS with the application number mentioned in that.
  4. There were 2 forms which needed to be printed, filled by the applicant and submitted back to RTO by re-uploading it. It was clearly mentioned that no visit to RTO is required. Please note that the downloaded forms contain our photo and signature, but I pasted a recent passport size photo for doctor's attestation purpose (similar to the one which I had uploaded initially).

Since I am 40 years old (YOB: 1984), I was asked to submit a Certificate for Visual Standards for Driving and Medical Certificate FORM 1A.

I visited Trinity Eye hospital at Palakkad, Kerala and informed them regarding the purpose of my visit. They collected both forms from me and conducted various eye tests and finally both the Medical Certificate and Visual Standard Certificate was attested by the (same)doctor and the same was returned to me.

Both the above certificates along with the old driving license copy was uploaded. Again, I too committed the same mistake of uploading my Digilocker PDF Driving license and due to this, my application was kept on hold. I received an SMS regarding the same and I uploaded a front and back photo of my old driving license.

After uploading the above files, within few days I received an SMS that the documents are verified and finally another SMS stating that the application is approved. I received an SMS web link to download the new driving license.

But I didn't visit the RTO for renewing my DL.

Now here lies my doubts and concerns.

Initially when I paid the application fee, it mentioned the postage fee for the new driving license and in the application flow, endorsement in DL and new DL print status was mentioned. However when I checked to see the status of my application, there is no mention of new DL printing status and the downloaded driving license copy looks outdated and doesn't look like a smart card DL copy.

Will I receive new SMART CARD type DL as post or should I apply for duplicate DL and pay the fee for reprinting as SMART CARD DL?
