Real-world fuel efficiency of the Maruti Ciaz 1.5L Petrol

The fuel economy varies widely, depending on traffic, and driving pattern.

BHPians King_pin09, theleapyes, SgtRepeat, vinair, SS-Traveller, tharunkar, and Jeevith recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

King_pin09 commented on his experience and what to expect:

Km/l depends entirely on driving style, terrain and road conditions. However, in urban conditions, one can expect anywhere between 12-14 km/l, whereas 18-19 km/l can be achieved on the highways. On a good stretch of road, such as Belgaum – Hubli section on NH4, I could achieve about 23.2 km/l, without fuss.

vinair had this to say on his Ciaz automatic:

Been driving the Ciaz automatic and the mileage is pretty consistent around 12.5 km/l with 100% A/C in bumper to bumper traffic. Have averaged 17 km/l on highways and seems to be improving with every run.

SgtRepeat drives a Ciaz Alpha AT:

Bought the Petrol Ciaz Alpha AT three months ago. Been driving it for roughly 20-30 km a day in the city with bumper-to-bumper traffic. I'm getting 10.5 km/l on an average. I drive with a light foot, mind you.

A little disappointed with the mileage, to be honest. Was expecting at least 12 km/l in city traffic and around 18 km/l on the highways.

theleapyes had this to say after 6 months with his Ciaz Petrol MT:

I have been driving a Ciaz Alpha MT Petrol 2019 edition, for the last 6 months.

City driving:

I clock nearly 50 km in my daily commute, encountering 30% bumper to bumper traffic. I drive with AC on most of the time and idle stop/start is also disabled in the bumper to bumper section. I get between 13 - 14 km/l on the MID, but on tankful to tankful method, I am consistently getting between 12-13 km/l.

Highway driving:

I did a Bangalore - Mantralayam round trip with 4 adults and a kid, in peak summer in April 2019, clocking nearly 1k km. AC was overworking all the time. I managed to get around 18 km/l. But, during this trip, I was exploring the high speed behavior of the car, so I was not my usual self and really stepping on the pedal, most of the times.

tharunkar shared his initial experience with his Ciaz:

On the first tank of petrol, I averaged 14 km/l under mixed driving which included a hill station climb.

Jeevith gives us an idea on what to expect in terms of fuel efficiency:

About 12-13 km/l in the city. And by "city", I mean 20 km in pretty much bumper to bumper traffic. So IMHO 12 km/l is practically as low as it gets (okay, maybe 10).

On the highways, on average I get about 18-20 km/l, which you can even push to 22-23 if you drive really sedately.

On a short drive, SS-Traveller had this to say:

It's also frugal. On the highway for about 20 km, I managed to eke out over 20 kmpl according to the MID display, keeping the speed between 70-90 kmph and using a light right foot.

In his review, he mentioned:

The fuel economy varies widely, depending on traffic, driving pattern and weather conditions. The worst, in congested Delhi and Kolkata traffic with the AC working hard, is 13.6 kmpl (tankful to tankful - the MID showed 14.3 kmpl). The best had been 20.7 kmpl, again tankful to tankful, while the MID showed 20.6 kmpl - this was between Muzaffarpur and the first rest stop on the ALE, and the speed varied between 70-90 kmph (cruise control rarely engaged). At a steady 105 kmph (GPS indicated 100 kmph) on cruise control from Lucknow to Delhi, the FE was 18.7 kmpl.

An update 4 months later:

BHPian JKDS's Ciaz Alpha petrol automatic returns 13.4-13.7 kmpl in city traffic in Delhi according to the MID. My Ciaz Alpha petrol MT returned between 12.5-14 kmpl when calculated by the tankful method, in Delhi city traffic during the peak summer period. Have got up to 20.7 kmpl on highway once.
