Re-registration of a 15 year old car to cost 8 times more

Re-registration of a 15 year old car could cost Rs. 5,000.

From October 2021, re-registration of a 15 year old car could cost Rs. 5,000, which is nearly 8 times more than the current rates.

Registration renewal charges for an old bike could be hiked from Rs. 300 to Rs. 1,000, while a fitness renewal certificate for a bus or truck that is over 15 years old could cost Rs. 12,500, which is 21 times higher than the current rates.

The proposed hike in registration renewal charges is part of the government's vehicle scrappage policy. Private vehicle owners will be required to renew the registration every 5 years after 15 years. After 8 years, fitness certificates for CVs will have to be renewed every year.

A delay in renewal of registration of private vehicles would attract a fine of Rs. 300-500 per month, while a delay in renewal of a fitness certificate for CVs would attract a penalty of Rs. 50 per day.
