The Government of India is planning to implement BS-IV emission norm across India by April 2017.
The norms will be introduced in phases. In the first phase, the will be made in Jammu and Kashmir with the exception of Leh and Kargil districts, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and certain districts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. This transition will take place in October 2015.
In April 2016, BS-IV norms will be enforced in Odisha, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Daman and Diu, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and certain districts of Maharashtra and Gujarat.
From April 2017, BS-IV norms will be made mandatory all over the country and only vehicles that comply with them will be allowed to be sold and registered.
With the implementation of BS-IV emission norms, the government aims to reduce emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur. These are found in lesser quantities in BS-IV fuel compared to BS-III fuel.
At present, BS-IV emission norms have been implemented in all the metro cities and some tier 1 cities in the country.
