NGT ban on old cars in Delhi upheld by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has upheld the ban on old cars imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).  The order by the NGT prohibited all diesel vehicles over the age of 10 years and petrol vehicles over the age of 15 years from running on the roads of New Delhi. This step was taken in the wake of the rising pollution in the national capital.

A plea was filed with the court challenging this ban. However, the Supreme Court has dismissed it saying that the NGT should be assisted and not discouraged.

With the ban in place, 1,18,773 private vehicles and 34,659 commercial vehicles in the city are likely to be affected.

About 5 lakh vehicles enter Delhi every day. Out of these, trucks number 50,000-75,000 while state transport buses number about 2,500. Many of these vehicles will also be affected by the ban.
