Next-gen BMW X1 spied ahead of 2022 unveil

BMW will introduce plug-in hybrid variants at a later stage, while an all-electric version, dubbed the 'iX1' will arrive in 2023.

The next-generation BMW X1 has been spotted testing internationally, ahead of its debut in 2022.

As seen from the spy images, the third-gen BMW X1 comes with a slightly evolved design, featuring an upright roofline, larger kidney grille up front, updated LED headlamps and tail lights; offering a much more angular and distinctive look, compared to the outgoing model.

While the spy images do not reveal the interiors of the upcoming SUV, reports do suggest a host of changes and updates to the cabin. The upcoming BMW X1 will also feature the latest infotainment system, while also offering a bunch of comfort and safety equipment.

Reports also suggest that the 3rd-generation BMW X1 will be underpinned by a heavily reworked version of the current UKL platform. The upcoming X1 SUV will continue to be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. Reports also suggest BMW will introduce plug-in hybrid variants at a later stage, while an all-electric version, dubbed the 'iX1' will arrive in 2023.

While details of the BMW iX1 are scarce, it is expected to be powered by a single motor rear-wheel drive electric powertrain, producing 285 BHP. It is also expected to offer 285 miles (458.6 km) on a single charge, as per the WLTP cycle.
