My classic Yamaha RD125 & RD200 restoration: New parts arrive from UK

With the correct parts now hopefully the RD 200 will be ready to get back home next week

Another batch of parts arrive from UK:

I feel truly blessed when I find a solution to a problem in record time. Working on so many different rare bikes is a challenge in its own and organising parts and that too the correct ones is just a mammoth task on another level. The RD 200 needed a new clutch set for sometime now but that needed to be planned well as it would require a new gasket and then if I was doing that I wanted to change the clutch cover as well. But, when I got all the required parts is when I realised that the clutch plates were off the wrong size including the pressure plates. Luckily the clutch plates on the RD 125 were off the same size and I just needed too order two sets as it required 6 clutch plates and each set had only five. The other challenge was to get the right dimension pressure plates as the RD 125 set didn’t have one and we used the pressure plates I had ordered over 15 years ago. So, i had to mix and match the part numbers which are used on other Yamaha models and luckily I got it correct this time around… Phew!

With the correct parts now hopefully the RD 200 will be ready to get back home next week and I am looking forward to experience the riding difference with the new clutch plates as the old ones were surely robbing away a lot of power especially during hard acceleration… Another thing we are planning to do is make the side panel fins which I couldn’t source separately.

On the RD 125 the coil plate is mounted on the engine and that work hopefully should be finished by next week too. Along with the RD 200 parts I ordered air filter and carb repair kit set as well for the RD 125. I had ordered air filter back in 2010 but that surely won’t be usable now so ordered a replacement. The carb repair kit is bought as a backup incase we need it when we put the carb parts together.. The tank would be leaving Paris soon and shipping cost is another major expense incoming. The tank costed me €80 and shipping cost is €148 and now I have to pray the Indian Custom officers go easy on me . Another big financial damage was in getting the papers updated as I still had the RC book and hadn’t shifted to a smart card so with penalty the total damages came upto 21k.. My CA is gonna have a laugh when I explain my 24-25 year financial expenses

Time for some pictures…

The coil plate goes on the RD 125 engine

Clutch plate set for the RD 200 and air filter for the RD 125.

Pressure plates for the RD 200

Carb repair kit for the RD 125.

Doesn’t have the float, slide and spring.

Yamalube 2T oil. Used 6 litres already on the Rd 250, RZ 350 and the last 2 for the RD 200. Placed an order for another 6.

My last RC in booklet form. Have requested if I can get the book back for memory
