Maruti WagonR crosses the 20-lakh sales milestone

The cumulative sales of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR hatchback have crossed the 20 lakh mark. It is the company's third model to achieve this feat after the Maruti 800 and Alto.

The WagonR was introduced in the Indian market back in 1999 (18 years ago). The model received a first facelift in 2003, followed by the introduction of the WagonR Duo LPG in 2004. A revised version of the car was launched in 2010 along with a CNG variant. Sales of the WagonR crossed the 10 lakh unit mark in 2011. In 2015, Maruti introduced an AMT version (AGS) of the car and also equipped the vehicle with dual airbags and ABS. In 2017, a new top-end VX+ variant was added.

The WagonR is powered by a 998cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 67 BHP @ 6,200 rpm and 90 Nm of torque @ 3,500 rpm. The CNG-powered engine churns out 58 BHP and 77 Nm of torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is offered as standard, while a 5-speed automated manual transmission is available as an option on select variants.

According to Maruti, 45% of WagonR customers bought it as their first car, while 20% purchased it multiple times. Since the introduction of the automated manual transmission, the AGS variant accounts for 16% of the total WagonR sales, while CNG accounts for 20%.
