Maruti trademarks 'S-Assist' name; Clutchless MT?

A clutchless manual transmission is already available in some Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki has filed a trademark application for the 'S-Assist' name. This has led to speculations that it could be used for the brand's clutchless manual transmission.

A clutchless manual transmission is already available in some Hyundai and Kia vehicles, in which it is dubbed as Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT). It uses a sensor and hydraulic actuator, which automates the clutch operation. The system allows the driver to use a normal H-pattern gearshift without having to worry about engaging and disengaging the clutch.

Apart from the standard manual and torque converter automatic transmission, Maruti currently offers automated manual transmissions (AMT) in its cars. If Maruti does introduce clutchless manual transmissions, it would be interesting to see how these variants will be positioned.

Given the popularity of Hyundai's iMT, we won't be surprised if more manufacturers introduce this technology in their cars.
