Managed to beat Hyundai's official record for max range on my Kona EV

With Kerala in midst of monsoon's, my Kona had been running at efficiencies of 12-13KM/KWh. So the cold climate is the only contributing factor I could think of.

BHPian EV_Fan recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

My previous hypermiling experiments were mostly all on warm/sunny days and almost gave values of 16-17KM/KWh.

This is the same as the Hyundai record was. So I had expected it to be the maximum.

Hyundai Kona Electric Record

But recently a short run on one of these cold days surpassed all of these at 19.2KM/KWh (52Wh/KM).

Now I do not know what factors contributed to these values but following were the conditions:

  • Cool or rather say cold weather at "25 deg C"
  • No lights/wipers/radio - literally no electrical
  • No AC
  • No resetting of trip meter
  • Proper round trip.

Here's what BHPian narayans80 had to say on the matter:

But its not sustainable with a 25C ambient temp no? You could drive 6 km with windows rolled up without AC. The greenhouse would warm up and it also gets a bit stuffy.

On an ICE car I saw exceptional FE without hypermiling on Jaipur-Kota stretch when temps were 11-15 C, overcast and the sun didn't peek out until 3 pm. I had to open the windows a bit once a while to let fresh air in.

Am curious to see an EV efficiency in such conditions

What is the sweet spot in terms of speed?
