Maintaining a superbike: Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX goes for its 3rd service

My heart skipped a beat and on listening to the cost of the OEM replacement pads, my wallet also trembled.

3rd Service - 20-01-2024

As we entered the new year, Nimbus was looking at her 3rd service and I was staring at my wallet. The ODO reading was 10,583 kms and the previous service done in July was at 7,117 kms. So, over the past 6 months, only 3,400 Kms had been logged, abysmal compared to my other bikes owned in the past. Anyway, we had to get the bike serviced as per the "Manual" recommendation of 6,000kms or 6 months whichever is earlier. Hence, I booked a slot for 20th Jan for the service and got a prompt response and a 10.30 am appointment was scheduled at Kawasaki Anzen Mumbai.

Unfortunately, the Saturday turned out to be a working session as the holiday was cancelled and an additional trading session was scheduled. I had planned to sit it out at the service centre and log all the details but had to go back to the office after dropping the bike at SVC.

Vinayak at Anzen was the service advisor who took all the details and checked for any problems. Everything was ok, just had to adjust the chain slack. Engine oil replacement was recommended and Airfilter cleaning was planned, he also said that they will not be washing the bike due to some issue at their end. Everything was ok up to this point. As he continued with his inspection and took photos, Vinayak observed that the brake pads on the front rotors were up for replacement and had 20% life left in them. My heart skipped a beat and on listening to the cost of the OEM replacement pads my wallet also trembled. He quoted a cool 12,000/- rupees and asked if we could go ahead and replace it. Without any research and hesitation, I said please change and left the SVC.

PS: I had no choice but to say yes since nobody would want to risk their life over faulty brakes. But I was secretly cursing myself for not doing some research beforehand and finding other alternatives.

Came back in the evening after market close, I was expecting the bill to be around 20K - and the final came to 20,077.85/-. I took a short test ride and everything seemed fine, the brakes were a bit off as the pads and rotors needed a little scrubbing in.

Billable amount - 16,274.93/-

GST charged - 3,802.92/-

  • 18% GST on Consumable

The next day rode 100 km to check if everything was ok and parked the bike for adventures to come ahead.
