Mahindra working on driverless cars

Mahindra Reva, the electric car subsidiary of the Mahindra Group, has started experimenting with driverless cars at its Bengaluru facility.

The company has submitted proof of the concepts of driverless cars in UK and Singapore. Testing of the cars on public roads will commence after the approval from the respective governments is obtained. The development of a production model will take 3-4 years after the trials start. Mahindra plans to focus on the US, European and South-East Asian markets.

The company has no plans to test vehicles on Indian roads at the moment. However, if it is successful in its tests on international roads, it might consider road tests in India. The software to control the car's movement and other aspects however, is being developed in India. Tech Mahindra, Mahindra's technology arm, is partnering Mahindra Reva for the project.

Other companies experimenting with driverless cars include Google, Tesla, BMW and Audi.
