Lewis Hamilton wins his fourth British Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton has won the 2016 British Grand Prix at the Silverstone circuit. This marks the third consecutive victory for the Mercedes-Benz driver on his home turf, and his fourth British GP win. Meanwhile, Hamilton's teammate Nico Rosberg managed to cross the line in second position, but faced a 10 second penalty after the race stewards noticed that Mercedes team had breached the newly implemented radio communication limitations. This pushed back Rosberg to the third place, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen was promoted to second.

The Silverstone race started under a safety car, since the circuit was drenched due to a heavy shower just before the start. But the track soon dried off within a few laps, prompting the teams to switch from wet tyres to intermediates, and eventually to slicks.

Hamilton led the race throughout, while Rosberg and Verstappen fought for the second spot. Eventually, it was Rosberg who managed to hold on to the position.

Things took a turn when race officials slapped a 10 second penalty on Nico Rosberg, owing to the fact that the Mercedes team gave illegal instructions to him over the radio. On lap 46, Rosberg developed gearbox problems, and the team instructed him to switch from sixth to eighth gear, thus avoiding seventh. The race stewards claimed that since the new regulations state that the driver must drive the car alone and unaided, Mercedes' aforementioned instruction was a breach of the Art. 27.1 of the Sporting Regulations. Thus, Rosberg was demoted to third, while Verstappen was elevated to second.

Mercedes-Benz plans to appeal against this decision and penalty.

Meanwhile, Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth, followed by Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, and the Force India duo of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg. Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz crossed the flag at eighth position, while Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat completed the top-10 list.

After the Silverstone British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton has managed to cut down his teammate's lead to just 1 point. The table standings now are:
1. Nico Rosberg - Mercedes - 168 Points
2. Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes - 167 Points
3. Kimi Raikkonen - Ferrari - 106 Points
