KTM Duke 390: Positive experience replacing bent rim under insurance

KTM quoted INR 6,500 just for the rim, and that didn’t include the labor charges for fitting it.

BHPian amyntor recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Hey everyone, I filed an insurance claim through Acko for the bent rim I mentioned earlier in this thread, and I thought I'd share my experience.

Originally, the bike was insured by HDFC and they were trying to make me (and the previous owner) jump through all kinds of hoops to get it transferred to my name despite getting the RC transferred to my name a long time ago. Don't even get me started on how atrocious their website was. So, after dealing with that mess, I just waited for the policy to expire and decided to switch to Acko. The whole process was done online through their website, and they even gave me a no-claim bonus discount automatically, without me needing to submit any old policy documents.

After the rim incident, I was debating whether to pay out of pocket for a replacement or go through insurance. KTM quoted INR 6,500 just for the rim, and that didn’t include the labor charges for fitting it. A bit of quick math showed that filing a claim would save me around INR 6,000, even after factoring in the loss of my no-claim bonus for next year.

So, I went ahead and started the claim process.

  1. They first asked for the basic details about the incident - what happened, how, and when
  2. They requested copies of my driving license and the RC
  3. Then they needed pictures: front view, rear view, side views, and close-ups of the damage

Acko would review the evidence, estimate the settlement cost, and share a quote with me. If I agreed, they would transfer the money directly to my bank account. If not, I would have to pay everything from my pocket first and then share the invoice, then they’d reimburse me based on the invoiced amount. That was the gist of the call.

Ten minutes later, they called again asking for clearer pictures with the bike parked under the sun. I obliged. Then another call came in, asking me to shoot a 30-second video of the bike, making sure the number plates were clearly visible, and also to upload the previous policy document. I submitted everything, and they confirmed they had everything they needed and would update me as soon as they had a resolution.

Three hours later, I got another call. They had completed the cost estimation and shared their quote: INR 7,384. After all deductions, I would receive INR 6,924 in my bank account. I thought the offer was fair, so I accepted. The money was transferred instantly.

Here's the detailed breakdown:

Overall, it was a smooth and positive experience, and now I'm waiting for KTM to deliver the new rim. It's been more than two weeks already.
