India-bound Volkswagen ID 4 electric SUV revealed

The ID 4 electric SUV will be imported into India as a CBU.

Volkswagen has revealed the production version of the ID 4 electric SUV concept that was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo.

The ID 4 electric SUV is based on the VW Group's MEB platform. It is the same architecture that underpins the Skoda Enyaq iV. The car measures 4,584 mm in length, 1,852 mm in width and 1,612 mm in height. Its wheelbase is 2,766 mm and the ground clearance is 210 mm. The car comes with a 543 litre boot.

The ID 4 boasts a similar look to other members of the ID family. It has a blanked out grille and an LED light bar. Similarly, at the rear, the car features slim tail lamp clusters with an LED light bar stretching across the width of the car. The 1st Edition models come with 20 or 21-inch alloy wheels, blacked-out roof and ORVMs. The car also gets flush-fitting door handles.

On the inside, the ID 4 features a floating 10-inch touchscreen infotainment head-unit and a digital instrument cluster. The 1st Edition Max ID 4 comes with a panoramic sunroof, 3-zone automatic climate control, augmented reality head-up display and powered front seats with massage function as standard.

The ID 4 comes with a rear-mounted electric motor that generates 201 BHP and 310 Nm. It is powered by a 77 kWh battery that is said to offer a maximum range of 520 km on a single charge (WLTP cycle). According to VW, the battery can be recharged using a 125 kW DC source in 30 mins which gives it a range of 320 km. It can also be charged using an 11 kW AC supply. An all-wheel drive version with 302 BHP and 450 Nm is expected to be introduced later.

The ID 4 features Adaptive Chassis Control system with progressive steering, adaptive dampers and an electronic differential lock. It also gets multiple driving modes.

The ID 4 will be Volkswagen's first electric vehicle for the Indian market and is expected to be launched around 2022. It will be imported as a completely built unit (CBU).
