Hyundai to unveil mass-market EV concept at 2022 Auto Expo

According to a media report, Hyundai plans to unveil a mass-market electric vehicle (EV) concept at the 2022 Delhi Auto Expo.

The report also states that Hyundai is working on increasing the percentage of locally sourced parts in its EVs. The company aims to have over 90% local content in its EVs. It is also in talks with battery suppliers including LG Chem to procure batteries for the local market.

From April 2021, the government of India is set to hike customs duty on EVs imported via the CKD route from 10% to 15%. The duty on imported battery cells is also set to increase from 5% to 10%. This has forced brands like Hyundai to push for more localisation.

At present, Hyundai offers the Kona EV in India. It uses a 39.2 kWh battery that powers an electric motor that has an output of 134 BHP and 395 Nm.
