Govt mulls norms for tyres to boost fuel efficiency, wet grip

Tyres will have to comply with set standards of rolling resistance for fuel efficiency, braking performance on wet roads and rolling sound emission.

The road transport ministry of the Government of India has proposed the introduction of norms for tyre manufacturers and importers. Under these new norms, tyres will have to comply with set standards of rolling resistance for fuel efficiency, braking performance on wet roads and rolling sound emission.

These norms will be applicable to locally manufactured and imported tyres of cars, minibuses and other heavy vehicles. Similar norms were introduced in Europe, back in 2016. In India, these norms are proposed to be introduced by October 2021 for new models of tyres and from October 2022 for existing models. The step to introduce these norms is expected to pave the way for introducing star ratings for tyres as well.

These norms are expected to help enhance the safety and fuel efficiency of vehicles. They will also help customers to make informed decisions while purchasing tyres for their vehicles.

According to the government, most of the tyre manufacturers present in India operate in international markets as well and comply with European norms.
