Geneva Motor Show axed indefinitely; Foundation to be dissolved

The cancellation of GIMS will not affect its sister event, GIMS Doha.

The Comite permanent du Salon international de l'automobile, organisers of the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) has decided to axe the automotive event in its entirety.

GIMS - which has been a staple automotive event and one of the most prestigious among European auto shows will not be held going further. The decision to axe the show comes after 4 years of turbulent market conditions brought about by COVID-19 since 2020.

The cancellation of GIMS also showcases a significant shift wherein the auto show landscape has become digitised, leaving little to no room for auto shows.Organisers of the event also stated that the varied uncertainties in the automotive industry has "eroded the attractiveness of the major European shows."

Alexandre de Senarclens, President, Comité permanent du Salon international de l’automobile Foundation, stated, “This extremely regrettable decision should not detract from the efforts and determination with which we have tried to regain our success. However, it has to be said that the lack of interest shown by manufacturers in the Geneva Salon in a difficult industry context, the competition from the Paris and Munich shows which are favoured by their domestic industry, and the investment levels required to maintain such a show, sound the final blow for a future edition.”

The Geneva Motor Show did take place this year, after a 4-year hiatus. However, the event witnessed participation from just 23 manufacturers. Reports also stated that the cancellation of GIMS will not affect its sister event, GIMS Doha. The show was held in Qatar's capital for the first time in 2023, with the next edition already scheduled for November 2025.
