Fuel pumps to be closed on Sundays in 8 states from May 14

Fuel pumps in eight states of the country will remain closed on Sundays, starting from May 14, 2017. This decision has been taken by the consortium of Indian petroleum dealers. The fuel pump owners' body has suggested that this step has been taken in line with the Prime Minister's call to conserve oil in order to save the environment.

The eight states where customers won't be able to fill up fuel on Sundays from May 14 are Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Haryana. A total of around 20,000 fuel pump outlets in the said eight states will be shut down for twenty-four hours on Sundays, post May 14.

In order to tackle emergency situations, one staff member will be available at every fuel pump. The fuel pump owners have claimed that the decision to shut down fuel outlets was taken a few years back. However, oil marketing companies (OMCs) had requested the owner body to reconsider its decision. However, with the Prime Minister openly coming ahead to support measures that can limit fuel usage in the country, the owners now believe that the Sunday shutdown will be successful.
