Ford unveils lightweight EcoBoost engine concept

Ford's EcoBoost engine has been showcased in a new lightweight avatar. Presented at the Detroit motor show, the concept features five major component changes that result in a claimed weight reduction of 15.5% (vs the standard EcoBoost).

Revised parts on the concept include the block, cylinder head, connecting rods, front cover and oil pan. The block tips the scales at 14 kg which is around 40% lighter than the standard block. The front cover and oil pan use carbon-fibre.

The cylinder head is also partly made of carbon-fibre, while the connecting rods are made of forged aluminium. Ford also plans to integrate cylinder deactivation technology to further the engine's efficiency figures. When this engine will enter mass production remains to be seen as a definitive timeline hasn't been officially stated.
