Electric vehicles will not be taxed in Maharashtra

The Government of Maharashtra is likely to waive value added tax (VAT), road tax and registration charges on electric vehicles in the state. The objective of this step is to increase the sales of electric cars and attempt to reduce the pollution in the state.

The scheme is expected to be rolled out in certain cities initially and later, it might be introduced in other parts of the state. The centre and state governments plan to work towards building the infrastructure for electric vehicles. It could be a public-private partnership. Fuel stations are likely to get charging points for electric vehicles.

However, the government has not disclosed any time frame for the implementation of the scheme.

Electric vehicles have not had much success in India. In 2015, the union government introduced the FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India) scheme in an attempt to boost sales of electric vehicles. While it made these vehicles more affordable, they have still not managed to capture the imagination of the people.
